thanks |THaNGks| noun an expression of gratitude

It seems kind of fitting to say thanks in the month of November and being thankful is what this post is all about. I have many things to be thankful for and I could run off a long list right here, but I’m just gonna stick to one thing today. I am in the business of creating, of capturing moments, of documenting life’s experiences and events. I love what I do. It fuels me to no end. I am a portrait photographer and I take pictures of other people. I see the joy in their faces when taking the pictures and when they see the final product. When their hearts smile, after they have seen their photos, that’s by far my favorite part! Now I know that feeling too. My face is always behind the lens, observing, looking, waiting for the right moment. This past weekend I was able to be the subject in the photos. My friend Lindsay offered to take my family portrait for christmas cards a few weeks ago, and I was more than thrilled to take her up on it. Lindsay and artist in her own right, is a friend I have been looking to collaborate with for a long time. She’s inspired by a lot of the same things I am inspired by. The water, nature, color, and texture, to name a few. Her art reflects a lot of that and more. So when she brought her “bag of things” as she likes to call it, I was super excited. I had planned to run the show, as any photographer asking a friend who doesn’t take pictures for a living would do, but Lindsay showed up with a plan. I think her exact quote was, “I don’t ever half-ass anything!” I was pumped. My son warmed up to her immediately, I know it’s who she is, but I also think it was her bright green beanie, he noticed they were both hat matching right away!  It was fast and super fun. I know now the stress it is on parents who come to a session with a less than happy child. Samuel did great, but I had to bribe him! You gotta do what you gotta do! Like any session I went home and immediately downloaded the images. Needless to say, I was moved. The lighting was great, the location awesome, the clothing choices were spot on, but it wasn’t what moved me to tears. I realized I have never been in a photo with my son (that isn’t a selfie) where we were captured being our silly mommy and son selves. I can’t describe how that made me feel, except being thankful! I will definitely look back on these photos and it will warm my heart, it will bring me back to Samuel’s two year old year, and I will smile! Thank you Lindsay it means so much to me.

“We take photos as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone.” -(author unknown)

You can take a gander at Lindsay’s art, magic sticks and project happiness movement here. Look out in 2016 for a collab between the two of us and all “her things!”

Needless to say, I’m inspired pretty regularly. This […]

proximity |präkˈsimətē| noun nearness in space, time, or relationship I’d heard a lot about this family, before I had met all of them. Mama Ana, is my coworker. wingman |ˈwiNGˌmən| n. a man who helps or supports another man; a friend or close associate I was painfully shy as a kid. Painfully! I found it hard to make friends, was always the quiet one, hated small talk, and was anxious if I ever had to lead or carry on a conversation. Shyness, honestly there weren’t to many perks […]

sea noun the expanse of salt water that covers most of the earth’s surface and surrounds its landmasses. Why are we so mesmerized by ginormous fish tanks? Why do people young and old, stop dead in their tracks to stare longingly at ocean life. I think it’s because the ocean is so vast, so beautiful, […]

time |tīm| noun an instance of something happening or being done; an occasion Hi All, Thanks for stopping by. I am so happy you are here! It is THAT time of year again. ease |ēz| noun absence of difficulty or effort I’d love to say that each session I do starts out immediately with an absence of difficulty or effort, but that would be a lie. It always, as it should, takes a few setups to ease into picture taking. It’s unnatural for most people. So, as the photographer it is my […]
