friendship |ˈfrendˌ sh ip| noun the emotions or conduct of friends; the state of being friends.

This would almost be the perfect word to describe Cindy, Brad, and I, had I not realized that the better words to describe our fantastic relationship is kindred spirits.  People come in and out of our lives all the time and leave a “footprint on our hearts,” as the saying goes. Sometimes you just know when these kinds of people enter your world and dramatically change your life. I met Cindy, a kick butt Ohio based photographer , almost three years ago at a workshop in Arizona. We spoke three sentences to each other max at the workshop, but have maintained a relationship as pen pals to say the least. How crazy is that. Our paths crossed awhile back in Los Angeles, but a commitment kept me from meeting her for lunch. How perfect was it that Vegas brought us together! Cindy, was running her first 1/2 Marathon in Vegas and I was out in the area at the same time for a friends birthday. We had planned on taking these photographs the day before her race and then enjoying brunch afterwards. OK, so there is a little of the back story.

When I saw Cindy I hugged her as well as her husband, Brad. This was the first time I was meeting him, but in a strange way I felt like I knew him. I felt like I knew them both. The session was fun, at 8am we almost had “the strip” to ourselves, and the light was just to die for. Brad and Cindy mentioned this was their first time away from home without their kids since they were born, so asking them to kiss and love each other wasn’t hard for them at all. I loved how they enjoyed each other so much, laughed with and at each other, became emotional when speaking of latest and upcoming projects, and allowed me to capture a glimpse of their relationship.  We sat down for lunch and discussed photography, business, upsets, triumphs, southern california, the midwest, relationships, and so on.  As a creative you long for conversations like this with people who feel your pain and support your talent. I haven’t felt this inspired in a long time. Cindy and Brad, you truly are a power couple… and I mean that in the most inspiring way. Follow your dreams…..there are great things to happen on the “other” side. I am proud to call you my friends!

creativity |ˌkrē-āˈtivitē| noun the use of the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work. I’m lucky enough to surround myself with a lot of creative people. My friends include actresses, artists, chefs, comedians, a gaggle of photographers, musicians, calligraphers, DIYers, interior designers, quilters, scrapbookers, writers, bloggers, and so on and so on. Needless to say, I’m inspired pretty regularly. This […]

proximity |präkˈsimətē| noun nearness in space, time, or relationship I’d heard a lot about this family, before I had met all of them. Mama Ana, is my coworker. She started work at my school this year and we worked side by side. I was so happy to get to know her and excited I could get some much needed advice […]

wingman |ˈwiNGˌmən| n. a man who helps or supports another man; a friend or close associate I was painfully shy as a kid. Painfully! I found it hard to make friends, was always the quiet one, hated small talk, and was anxious if I ever had to lead or carry on a conversation. Shyness, honestly there weren’t to many perks […]

sea noun the expanse of salt water that covers most of the earth’s surface and surrounds its landmasses. Why are we so mesmerized by ginormous fish tanks? Why do people young and old, stop dead in their tracks to stare longingly at ocean life. I think it’s because the ocean is so vast, so beautiful, […]

time |tīm| noun an instance of something happening or being done; an occasion Hi All, Thanks for stopping by. I am so happy you are here! It is THAT time of year again. Time holly jolliness, kind of annoying songs, red and green decorations, a man in a fat suit, shopping, cookies, family time, snow days, and picture time. […]

greeting |ˈgrētiNG| noun a polite word or sign of welcome or recognition Season’s Greetings! Too early you say? Not for this family. They are prepared for the impending holidays. They booked their session early and got a jump on the inevitable craze of the holiday cards. I met Matt, Lindsay and baby Dylan a few Sunday’s ago in the Presidio of San […]

ease |ēz| noun absence of difficulty or effort I’d love to say that each session I do starts out immediately with an absence of difficulty or effort, but that would be a lie. It always, as it should, takes a few setups to ease into picture taking. It’s unnatural for most people. So, as the photographer it is my […]

survival |sərˈvīvəl| noun the state or fact of continuing to live or exist, typically in spite of an ordeal They did it yay! They made it! Lynda and Andy’s little (not so little anymore) babies have turned one! I remember feeling like I would never get there and when I survived the first year as a mommy, I felt very accomplished! […]

happenstance |ˈhapənˌstans| noun chiefly N. Amer. coincidence It had been five years since I photographed this family. Then it was for Eriko and Peter’s wedding. Dorian, Eriko’s son was thirteen and little Liam wasn’t even a glint in his parents eyes yet! I was making my annual trip down to Southern California to set up holiday sessions when I got […]

thanks |THaNGks| noun an expression of gratitude It seems kind of fitting to say thanks in the month of November and being thankful is what this post is all about. I have many things to be thankful for and I could run off a long list right here, but I’m just gonna stick to one thing today. I […]
